Subject: Definition of "ephemeral"

In Lowrie vol 3 d. burmanni is described as an "ephemeral" species.
Just what does he mean by this? Is this an accepted botanical term?
In cultivation its usually described as an annual, and he describes
other species as annuals in vol3 so he must mean something different.
