One thing that often works is predator urine. You can find it in a large,
well-stocked garden supply center. Bobcat, wolverine, fox, etc.... products
will usually repel deer, raccoon, elk (if you happen to live in the
mountains), and other critters. Read the label before purchasing! I've used
dried bobcat piss to keep pesky critters away from my CP's with good
success.

I have yet to find a product that will work on birds. I have a problem
involving bluebirds tearing up my Sarracenias that are grown in pots outside
my greenhouse. Netting would work but takes away from the beauty of a clump
of colorful leuco's!
