Subject: Funding for conservation projects

Dear All

The Carnivorous Plant Society (UK) and Atlanta Botanical Garden (ABG) -
Working for Conservation -

The Carnivorous Plant Society (UK)is proud to announce its recent donation
of $1,000 to the Atlanta Botanical Garden's Conservation Program. The
Carnivorous Plant Society (UK) has recently consulted its members on the
need to become more actively involved in the conservation of carnivorous
plants on a national and international basis. The Society was approached by
ABG to help sponsor the Garden's Conservation Program, in particular the
recovery of the three Federally Endangered Sarracenia, S. rubra spp.
jonesii, S. rubra ssp. alabamensis and S. oreophila in the states of
Georgia, Alabama, and North and South Carolina.

The money will go a long way towards helping ABG carry out vital
restoration and propagation work to ensure the long-term viability of these
highly endangered populations. This work will include annual visits to
sites that are often highly degraded from human activities or that have
been mismanaged over the years. Restoring these sites to an open,
nutrient-poor habitat entails restoring the hydrology and the
reintroduction of natural processes, such as fire, which would normally
keep woody species in check. The survival of such sites also requires full
collaboration and coordination with a number of different groups and
agencies. These include landowners (most of the sites in the southeastern
USA are in private hands), the US Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature
Conservancy, the Natural Heritage Program, and private individuals and
hobbyist groups, such as carnivorous plant societies.

ABG would like to thank The Carnivorous Plant Society (UK) and its members
for their initiative and hard work in raising this money through the public
shows they attend each year (Chelsea Flower Show, NEC Birmingham Show), and
from membership contributions and seed sales.

Following on from Frank Gallep's speech at the recent Bonn Conference that
stressed the need for carnivorous plant societies to collaborate more
closely, ABG would like to praise The Carnivorous Plant Society (UK) for
its swift and generous donation. ABG's policy of low-cost, project-driven
and collaborative conservation work will ensure this gift makes a great
difference to a number of threatened ecosystems that support not only
carnivorous plant species, but also other endangered flora and fauna.
