Subject: Cephalotus

About a year and a half ago, I got a small Cephalotus from Andrew
Marshall at Cascade Carnivorous Plants in the Seattle area. (Thanks,
Andrew!) This was and still is my first and only Cephalotus. I
provided what I thought to be appropriate care, and have been rewarded
with a steady succession of pitchers and leaves. Right now ther are
several very small pitchers buried in the moss that grew on my planting
medium, about four larger pitchers an inch or so tall, and six new
regular leaves, about one to two inches long. Total spread of the plant
is about3-3/4 inches, or about 9-1/2 cm. (Please, Jose, do not provide
several pages of information on how to convert between inches and
centimeters! ;-) )

What prompts me to write is a strange " funnel" the little Ceph has
produced. Supported by a petiole about 3/4 inches long, a more or less
vertical funnel, NOT resembling a Ceph pitcher has been developing for
several weeks. The funnel itself is about 3/4 inch tall. One side of
the funnel has a plain rounded top or rim. The other side sports two
relatively large leafy points. The mouth of the funnel is about 3/8 inch
wide.

Is this something "between" a pitcher and a leaf? A "leatcher"? A
"piteaf", maybe?

At first, when it was much smaller, I thought this structure resulted
from insect damage-- maybe a chewed-up developing pitcher or leaf, but
this is not the case.

Undoubtedly, those of you with Cephalotus experience can shine some
light on this development. I'd be grateful for any information about
what my Ceph is up to.

BTW-- It's sending up it's first flower stalk, now, too. It'll be
awhile before it actually flowers, though. Can Cephs self- pollinate?

Thanks for any info,

Lance
