Subject: My Brocchinia reducta's history

Hi!,
I was given 2 plants by Andreas Wistuba (THANKS Andreas) shortly after he
arrived back from the Tepuis in 1989, they were about 15cm each in height, I
gave them the Grand names of A and B. Four years later at a height of 25cm, A
flowered, tried the pollinating thing, but it did not yield any viable seed,
but the plant produced growths from its base, being keen on Tillandsias, I
realised it would be prudent to remove the growths as they reached the 2cm
mark, in height, I managed to remove 14 before the mother plant died, leaving
the last growth attached to the dying mother. The early removed growths vary
greatly in size, ranging from 4 to 15cm in height, two of these, the tallest
growths produced their own little ones, 5 in total, without flowering and are
still alive, and the last growth that was left attached to the mother, is now
23cm in height, flowering with 1 young growth already appearing. B produced a
single growth 4 years ago which is now 20cm in height, without flowering, and
is now 54cm in height. An extremely variable species???????????.
D.regia is so easy from cuttings, a piece 2cm in length will invariably
produce an adult plant in about 2 years, if taken in early Spring. The adult
plant tends to produce long, thick roots. Remove all except one, and cut into 2
or 3cm lengths, the larger the cutting, the quicker the growth will mature, and
lay them horizontally on a mix of 90% by volume of peat, with the rest being
washed river sand, to keep the mix open, cover with a thin layer of pure peat,
the root cuttings just covered, shade and high humidity..... patience!!!! and
Bobs your uncle, within a month many growths, perhaps not as many as were layed
down, but still a good amount should take.

                    ALL THE BEST Eric
