I think you will find that the mealybugs have not spread from the tops of your plants, to the roots. As
mealybug are a different species than root mealybug and do not live on the roots. So in fact you have two pests
to deal with not one.
Try to keep ants under control near your plants as they will transport both species of mealybugs from
plant to plant and they will feed on the secretions of the mealybugs (yuk).
