Dear Carnivorous Planters,
Hi ! My name is Tan Wee Kiat. "Tan" refers to my family,
(and my complexion); "Wee Kiat" is the name my parents
gave me. "Wee" happens to be indicative of my small size
In Singapore when Chinese meet each other, the usual
greeting is not "How are you?" but "have you eaten yet?".
Clearly, there is some similarity between ChinesePeople (CP)
and Carnivorous Plants. Anyway, it is much better to be greeted
with "Have you eaten yet" than "Hey? What's eating you?"
Small as our island-nation of Singapore is (its land area is
substantially bigger at low tide), my friends and I have come
across 6 Nepenthes (3 species: N ampullaria, gracilis, and
rafflesiana) and 3 hybrids (N. hookeriana, trichocarpa, and
dominii/intermerdia) and 5 Utricularia. You might know that
the upper pitchers of N ampullaria are not commonly seen.
We have, very luckily, seen them at 6 different locations in
southern Peninsular Malaysia (but not here in Singaore, so far!)
and have written this up in Nature Malaysiana, 20:1, 1996.
Regards,
                 Wee Kiat
