Michael - a friend far more experienced in aquatic Utric
cultivation than I tells me that many of these will grow
continuously (i.e. no turion formation) if kept warm over
the winter. This is currently how I am treating my
          U.purpurea.

Cancer risk with Benlate - I have not heard of any link of
benlate with cancer. In the UK there have been some nasty
birth defects which some believe are linked to benlate
exposure - there was a TV program looking into the link of
benlate exposure (particulaly pregnant women) to the
occurance of babies being born without eyes. There was some
suggestion that contact with contaminated clothes (i.e farm
workers wifes washing contaminated otheralls) was enough to
cause a risk. I am not aware of the current official status
of this material in the UK, though if anyone knows anything
that is as effective on Sarras as benlate I would be keen to
          know.

          Regards
