Darlingtonia Stand

I had an adventure today. I checked out a wild stand of Darlingtonia about
20 miles from my school. They were up at about 5500 feet, in a draw with a
clearly defined stream running through the center. The plants were growing
maily on one side of the stream, the soil was moist, but I noticed some the
plants were up away from the stream where the soil was less moist. Lots of
plants to see, some with dried up flowers with seeds. I'd say it streched
about 1/2 mile from end to end.

It was a nice stand (on private land, Sierra Pacific Logging) with what
looked like good recruitment for next season. I saw signs of bear, coyote
and cattle, but none of the plants seemed to be grazed on. The soil was
pretty mushy, maybe a 20% sand content, but it was firm and covered with
lots of other annuals and grasses. The snow should be here in the next 2
weeks or so and that will be the end of the road.

Just thought I'd say that.
