CBREWER,
I read your post about an outdoor bog and can give you some experiances
with them. If the bog box is not sealed you will be wasting alot of
water thru the spring and summer. A simple pond liner will relieve this.
Liners can be of anything that holds water but does not break down or
crack in the winter. I've used a rubberized vinyl for years with no
problems. Poly can breakdown with the weather either sun or freeze.
You can leave it so it can drain in the winter by folding down one of
the coners of the liner. Some of the pea gravel has alkaline properties
which will be harmful in time to the plants. If you can get the silica
quartz sandblasters sand in a #8 grit this works perfect as a mix with
peat moss.
You will need some sort of protection for all the critters that will
visit. And this will be up to your own preferance on what you want the
bog to look like. There are some terrestrial orchids that do well in this
type of bog and of course native bog plant like bog rosemary, cranberry,
labrador tea? Oh don't forget the weeds! Truly Tom Kahl/Nepenthes Club
