Hi, Clarke. Hydroponics 'requires' that the plant is grown in an
open-ended tube or an inert medium with the roots dangling in the
solution. In most of the systems I've seen, the solution is kept
circulating to maintain aeration and reduce chances of bacteria and other
'nasties'. The inert medium I saw used was baked expanded clay pebbles.
Don't know anyone still growing with hydroponic systems--mechanical
problems, dead plants; solution problems, dead plants; even law
enforcement problems--and no, he wasn't growing illegal plants, but they
enjoyed tearing up his greenhouses a few times.
Happy New Year,
Chelsie
