Dear WALDROP,
If you are living in a mild winter area, you might consider a back yard
bog. The book "Waterscaping" comes to mind. It is amazing what you can do
with a bit of plastic and some peat. While I am not in agreement with the
use of cement in building ponds, this little book has wonderful plant lists
and several suggestions on building your own marsh, bog, and swamp. Since I
live in earthquake country, cement is just out of the question. (Yes, I know
there is a swimming pool in every backyard in LA, but you don't know how many
have BIG mother cracks now.) Cement also leaches dangerous salts. If you
build one outside you can control the amount of light etc.
Interested? I have references.
