Hello all,
The problem with using cedar and other conifers with reptiles is that the
aromatic oils in the bark/wood is the toxic medium. This is why cedars and
some other conifers are used to repel moths. The reptile barkis sold in
stores are fir and other conifers but have been kiln dried to drive off the
aromatic oils. This is why the bagged reptile barks have no "piny" odors.
One of the less expensive and more suitable reptile bedding substrates is one
of the better grades of cypress mulch. Here in the Philadelphia
(Pennsylvania, USA) region it can be found for around 3 bags (at 3 cubic
yards each) for about $10.00. The stuff is a reddish color and doesn't have a
large number of contaminants. It doesn't seem to break down as readily and
holds moisture well. I'm not sure how well it would work for cps but it does
hold up well, and doesn't seem to cause any adverse reactions to either
reptiles and amphibians.
