To add to what John said:
If you are looking for large amounts of sand, try a Concrete company. In
our parts of the world it is called( guess what!) - "concrete sand." It is
fairly course, and sells for about $12.00 a ton picked up or $15.00 a ton
delivered. A regular sized pickup truck can haul a ton if it has good tires
and you don't have to travel at expressway speeds. Do not buy builders
sand as it is very fine and is used in making mortar mix. Like John, I use
to wash it, but now I just use it right off of the pile. I have used it for
the past 20-25 years with out any problems. By the way if you have
children, get twice as much sand as you need. The netting he mentioned also
works well to keep raccoons, armadillo, foxes, and squirrels, from digging
in the bog looking for crawfish and hiding nuts.

:Hello everyone,
reading the questions and replies about sand is always interesting, seeing
the troubles this can cause in some parts of the country and world. For my
2 cents worth, I use Bagged sand I purchase at a local lumberyard. Years
ago, I bought a 90 lb bag ($5 US), and tested it on a few plants for a
season....
