1) Definition of terms: A. a picture showing adventitious roots, glands, curled leaves, flower parts, etc B. discuss the typical terms used to describe ping habits, and what they mean (i.e. emarginate, rolled, lanceolate?) 2) Discussion of species organized by leaf/growth type: A. Tropical homophyllous (simplest case) i) characteristics I) flowers twice a year II) continuous growth ii) I) examples a) European: P. lusitanica b) Mexican: P. agnata c) Southern US: PP. lutea, planifolia, primuliflora II) cultivation (media, dormancy, light, water, temps) a) Peat/perlite for North American, b) vermic/perlite for Mexican. c) Bring examples of the fine & coarse vermiculite, plus maybe a small cup of decent peat. B. Tropical heterophyllous (next simplest, adds another leaf types) i) characteristics I) flowers twice a year II) two different leaf types in summer/winter ii) I) examples a) calciphilious: gypsicola, heterophylla b) calciphobic: P. colimensis, cyclosecta, ehlersia, esseriana, moranensis, rotundiflora, zecheri c) Discuss that there is some argument about whether soil pH matters, or if the reports are even accurate? II) cultivation (media, dormancy, light, water, temps) a) calciphilous likes high pH (limestone, gypsum, etc) b) calciphobic like acid media C. Temperate homophyllous (introduces hybernacs) i) characteristics I) flowers once a year II) forms hybernacula ii) I) examples a) P. alpina, grandiflora, macrocera, vulgaris II) cultivation (media, dormancy, light, water, temps) D. Temperate heterophyllous (most complex, hybernacs, two leaf types) i) characteristics I) flowers once a year II) forms hybernacula III) two different leaf types ii) I) examples a) P. longifolia, vallisnerifolia. II) cultivation (media, dormancy, light, water, temps) E. Common hybrids in cultivation i) P. x Sethos, x `George Sergeant', ehlersia x gypsicola 3) Propagation: A. leaf cuttings demo (10 min.) B. seed C. quick tissue culture overview (2 min.) 4) Miscellaneous cultural A. fertilization i) miracid spritz ii) Jurg Steiger recommends dilute egg white spray twice a year B. Pests i) fungus gnats ii) aphids iii) slugs iv) root rot -------------------------- Perhaps 3) and 4) should go before the "blow by blow"? I'm thinking that section 2) will be continously illustrated by slides. We would only talk about species that we have photos of. It would also be nice to have photos of your "under the tank" growing setup just to have a slide of a typical growth setup. We could also photo my greenhouse bench, and floor setup, plus your work setup for variety. Do you know a book that has a good illustration for 1) A,B. that we could redraw or make into a slide? -- Rick We have to think how we're going to present the slides. We probably want to present them all at once, after the discussion, co-incident with explaining what they are examples of. I.e. first we briefly go over the types, which I'd imagine people will think is somewhat dry so we should proceed quickly. Issue the handouts at this point. Then do the slides, discussing what they show in relationship to the earlier discussion. Then turn the lights on and do part 3 & 4 above to finish up.
