closeup of plant with offshoot

This images shows the development of a daughter plant attached to the parent plant by a stolon. The gemmae of this species remain attached to the parent plant. Once these start to develop in the spring, a stolon projects the daughter plants away from the parent. This is a useful adaptatation for this cliff dwelling species as it enables the plant to colonise other suitable sites away from the parent plant.
