DATE: 1990 NAME: [Nepenthes dubia] CREDIT: Photograph by Andreas Wistuba (andreas.wistuba@rhein-neckar.de) TEXT: { Nepenthes dubia certainly is one of the least well known species of the genus. It is only recorded from Gunung Talakmau in West Sumatra though there is a lot of confusion with a hybrid between N. inermis and N. talangensis which is found on Gunung Talang. This hybrid resembles it a little. Note the lid of the pitcher which points backwards and the flat peristome. Interestingly N. dubia grows exclusively as an epiphyte.

The species is unique for having only a very rudimentary peristome in the upper pitchers. Upper pitchers are yellow-green and infundibuliform. The lower pitchers have a well developed broad peristome, somewhat similar to N. dubia. Note the characteristic shape of the pitcher lid. Photographs were taken in 1989 on Gunung Gadud and Gunung Gadang, both in West-Sumatra.

The species occurs in two forms, a highland form which is a climber and a lowland form which almost exclusively grows as an epiphyte often near rivers on overhanging trees. The highland form does not climb with the help of the pitcher bearing tendrils like most other Nepenthes but by clinging its leaves around a tree. The leaves are arranged characteristically in two rows.
