Large air-rosette pitchers.

Nepenthes ampullaria Air rosettes with large pitchers pitchers. Photographed in Irian Jaya near Tayeve. Our guide is holding a vine with a huge rosette. Another one is visible in the foreground. Both rosettes are freely hanging in the air the growing main shoot often being 10 meters and more away in the trees. Nepenthes ampullaria is notable for only having ground- and rosette pitchers but no real upper pitchers. Climbing vines grow short side shoots which grow as rosettes with highly reduced leafblades.
