Although California boasts with many interesting plants, Darlingtonia californica is certainly one of the most unusual and most characteristic ones for the montane north of the state. The pitchers shown in the picture all orient their hoods so that the lids (appendages) touch the wet rock surface. Possibly this serves to direct prey right from the rock into the pitchers.
