I've been on this list for some time, and never really had the chance to
write before. I work at the Cereal Disease Laboratory, and although we
study a variety of pathogens, the rust fungi have been our main focus for
many years. I don't know if the red splotches are a rust fungus or not, but
if they are, you might find it beneficial to check the plants around your
Neps for infection as well. It might appear as black circles, brown, or
yellow. The rust fungi tend to be very virulent, and will attack most
plants. Your best bet is to cut back any plants you find nearby that are
also infected. This works with the rust fungi that attack cereal crops, and
I would assume the same would hold true for the other varieties. Sulfur
will dry up the infection as well (if it's rust), but I don't know what the
would do to your plants. You could visit our web site, but the information
is all designed for cereal crop growers. The address is
http://www.crl.umn.edu. Anyway, good luck, and I hope it all works out for
you.
