Subject: Introduction

Hi Folks,

I'm a Nepenthes Nut and have been lurking on this list for about a year
now, saying little, but thoroughly enjoyed reading all the postings. As it
happens, there have recently been quite a lot of interesting postings about
Nepenthes that I find myself itching to comment on. However, I understand
that it's customary to introduce oneself before delurking - so here goes!

I am just (only just!) the right side of 40 and have been growing Nepenthes
since the early 1980s when I used to run a small nursery in Brunei called
'Isra Exotics' growing Nepenthes for export. Sadly though, economics and
politics forced me to close that operation down in 1990 and return to
electronics engineering - my former pursuit. One year in the Middle East
and six years in the Royal Hong Kong Police as an electronics specialist
saw me back on my feet and able to set up once again doing what I love best
- growing Neps.

My girlfriend, Ineke, and I now run a new nursery in Sri Lanka which we
call 'Borneo Exotics', named in recollection of my mis-spent youth in
Brunei! We're growing lots of Nepenthes from seed in pretty huge numbers
and so far haven't sold a single plant. Sales are expected to begin in
Spring of next year. It's my greatest pleasure at the end of the day to
wander around the nursery with beer in hand looking at all the emerging
forms that have sprung from seeds sown two years (or more) ago! It's
amazing how many strange hybrids and forms have appeared. I'll have to go
through all Jan's postings on naming of cultivers one of these days.

We maintain a web site specialising in Nepenthes at <www.borneoexotics.com>
which is long overdue for an update. Ineke is at present on an expedition
with some of our German friends and only last week they discovered a highly
probable new species of Nepenthes, so upon her return to Sri Lanka later
this month we'll update the site with photos of the 'species nova'. She's
at present on another previously unexplored mountain range, so who knows -
perhaps we'll have two new species to show on the site...wishful thinking...

I'd better stop now before this turns into an autobiography!

Good growing etc.

Best regards,

Rob Cantley
