Subject: sterilizing sphagnum

I have recently collected a lot of excess sphagnum from my plants, and
would like to use it as a potting medium. But whenever I try to do so it
fouls and gets all nasty and skunky. The store-bought sphagnum never
does this.
So, is there a way that I can sterilize it or something to prevent this
from happening and allow me to use it?
