Subject: Wintering CP indoors...

As most of you know, my CP are all within the confines of my
Klima-gro indoor greenhouse. Some have written and asked me how the
plants that require dormancy would get this inside an indoor greenhouse.

Of my plants that require it, I now have seven VFTs, two d.
rotundifolia, three d. intermedia, and two seedling S. purpurea. My
drosera all went into complete hibernation in October. They stopped
producing new traps and formed tight little "fists" of leaves at the
growing points. They haven't been forced by the grow lights at all.
The VFT traps also stopped forming at the same time, and the plethora of
traps remaining are frozen in time, but still able to capture. No new
VFT traps are ramping up at this time. The sarracenias have slowed
their growth, but as seedlings, I'm not sure how much dormancy comes
into play.

Of my much celebrated d. adelaes, the main plants (about three) that
I first purchased in Feb 97 are all dead, but I now have about fifteen
plantlets which are now as large as the original adults. They continue
to spread all over. My d capillaris (six adults, two plantlets, and two
seedlings) also continues to grow unabated.

The main mutt Ping died (it never seemed very happy) but did leave a
plantlet behind. This was also true for my Pinguicula Primuliflora
pictured on my page. The really unusual "tongue" ping also expired. I
think the pings have trouble with the bright lights in the Klima-gro.
Pings seem to like shady locations.

I did try something new to prolong the d. rotund and d.interm
dormancy- last night we got our first measurable snow, so I sprinkled
snow around those plants. This gives them a little chill, and provides
them with rainwater at the same time. The remaining snow I collected
melted (of course) and I used this on the adelaes. The adelaes all look
nice and dew covered today- after drinking distilled water for months, I
guess the snow water was a welcome change. Sorta like watering your
lawn is never as good as a nice drenching rain for it.

Cheers,
Paul

PS- I got a scanner for XMAS so, I'll be updating my CP page with new
and exciting images from the NJ wilds much faster come spring!
