Subject: "The rules were made to be broken"

I have recently been talking to various Sarracenia growers about there
plants and discovered that most of the 'rules' for growing them, as
suggested mainly by Adrian Slack in his two books, are being broken, and
for the most are achieving very good results (some excellent). One grower I
know swears by using straight Sphagnum Moss, in a tray system, another is
using a 50/50 peat pumice mix, and is using standard tap water, but no tray
so the water is flushing the mix everytime. Both growers have some of the
best Sarracenia I have seen.
Some of the older books around suggest that the plants are difficult, and
should only be grown by experts in specialised conditions. I have decided
that what works for you, works, and in most cases the books around can't be
taken as gospel, but only as guide lines, and one should experiment, to see
what works best for them.

Thoughtfully,
Peter Lowden
