Subject: advice

 Hi,

I'm new to the group and I have to admit a complete novice. I bought a VFT with no knowledge of
how difficult they are to grow and of course everything went fine for a while and now I'm
very confused about what to do next. Just to fill you in on the various things I've already
done wrong.

The day I got it (13th August) I repotted it in a bigger pot about 4 inches in depth and 5 inches
in diameter. Using Multipurpose compost in addition to the soil that was already on the
plant, I hadn't a notion about sphagnum moss at this stage.

I stuck it in my Patio window which gets sun for most of the day (bear in mind I live in Dublin
Ireland so the weather isn't very hot).

I always kept it standing in tap water (I've been trying to collect rain water for the past
week since I found out tap water wasn't good for it but miracle of miracles it hasn't rained
in a week!!!).

I fed it flies about one or two a week. Is this enough?

And of course any visitor I had immediately stuck their finger in it to see it close.

To be honest I'm surprised it's lasted this long.

So to my current dilemma, all the traps started to go black (I have now removed these) yet it
was still producing new shoots. So now I have a VFT with no traps and 5 new shoots. But what
really worries me is that on the oldest of the new shoots as soon as the trap (which was very
small) started to form the shoot started to die.
So have I killed it or is it trying to enter dormancy and if so what should I do? I still have 4
healthy looking shoots, although the trap bit is looking very small.

If you don't want to clutter up the mailing list with advice for a novice please mail me at
jbilling@ie.oracle.com any info will be very welcome.

Regards,

June.
