Subject: birds in pots

Hello Phil,
and all others plagued with birds in pots or other places that
they shouldn't be. I have the easiest, cheapest (over time), re-usable
and absolutly effective method of deterrence. It beats all scare and bomb
type methods, is not harmful except to the most stupid of birds, and then
only because the human didn't get there fast enough. It is the method I
have used for years with 100% success. I refer to bird mesh. It is a
fine black plastic netting that one can purchase at any decent
hardware/nursery store for the control of birds in fruit trees. It does
not degrade so you can use it for years. It is cheap to begin with at
less then $20.00 for enough to do all but the largest collections, (I use
two). What you would do is to knock a few stakes into the ground around
and in between the pots then drape the screen over like a tent. If your
problem is robins as mine is (american robins Turdus migratorius) then
odds are they are merely seeking the best material with wich to build a
nest out of. They will stop after they have finished anyway. You
can then remove the screen and wait until next year. Other birds are not
so easily stopped however and so perhaps a permenant cage of the stuff is
in order. What ever the approach, the result will be the same... no more
bird (or other critter except invertabrates) damage.
        Hope this helps.
        Andrew
