Subject: New surprises in the KGP!

KGP=Klima Gro Project

A couple of new discoveries in the terrarium tonight:

One of my VFTs had died before the KG arrived (I had three, the
other two are growing like crazy now) and knowing that the worst thing
to do with a dead or dying VFT is to throw it out, I peeled the "bulb"
apart and placed them in the terrarium. The sections were still white,
but they fell to pieces pretty easily. When I put them in the KG, I
placed a thin layer of sphagnum over top and forgot about them.
Tonight, (two months later) I noticed a tiny cluster of traps emerging
from the spot! VFT redux!

After all of the hoopla (it was covered on CNN... you missed it?) of
the new VFT clone, I was taking an inventory of all of the baby drosera
adelaes when I noticed that the formerly sick VFT (Which has come back
to life in the KG as I've related in other CP-Digests) was starting to
get a pink tinge in it's traps just as my larger VFTs have done! This
is real interesting since this plant gets almost no sun because of the
KG's frame. This seems a real vindication for the KG's light bulbs,
eh? (If in fact, light and not genetics is the main reason for redding
in VFTs.)

Upon closer inspection of the VFT, I noticed tiny little Sundew
traps emerging from the living moss it was shipped in... this is not a
shoot from any other sundews in the KG. It looks sort of like my
drosera capillaris plants, but the traps also seem to be standing
upright, which leads me to believe it may be a drosera intermedia! I'll
keep an eye on this and report any other developments.

I'm seriously considering purchasing a sarracenia psittacena or
purpurea and trying it out in the KG. This is the best terrarium I've
ever owned.

On another note, for those following our bug hunting- the trap that
ate the spider my wife caught reopened tonight. Let me tell you this
wasn't an itsy-bitsy spider that walked up the waterspout... this thing
was a regular tarantula (well, compared to the microscopic fare we
usually see around here). It's body was the size of a dime- with legs
extended, it had to be a nickle in diameter! I'd have been running for
an axe before I got close to the beast. What's the cause of this
remarkable turnabout in Diane?
"My babies were hungry, so I got them something
to eat..."
Wow. Pretty cool, huh? (Grisly, but cool...) CP have a new fan.

Cheers,
Paul
