On Palawan, N. alata(the weed that it is) was growing in huge thickets along
the road to Sabang from Puerto Princessa. The soil was a mix of shale rock,
shale pebbles, and shale dust, which was wet and was a mineral rich mud.
I didn't dig any up to see how deep the roots were but the mud layer was
fairly thin.

In a few books and photos I noticed Neps growing half submerged in muddy
water and as epiphytes.

hope this helps,
