Yes, I think the weird "clay", in the original Stefano's message, is a
little clay pebble.
In Italy, these clay pebbles are named "argilla espansa" (expanded clay) and
it was used to absorb the water and then to moisture the soil.
Infact the Expanded Clay usually stays underneath the soil, to prevent a too
fast drying up.
