you're quite correct , the biting chigger is indeed the immature form. and
the eggs are generally laid off host. I have never actually known them to
completely burrow under skin, but I have had them gather in such large
numbers around a hair follicle on my leg that the mass was easily visible
from a distance away. but at least it made collecting them easy.
