As a hobby, among other things, I am a beekeeper. It is true that there
have been introduced in north america two kinds of mites that are
killing bee colonies, both feral and commercial. Beekeepers are
fighting the infestation two ways. One is the use of selectively bred
bees that are mite resistant, and the other is to use a form of
pesticide, it's much like a "no pest strip" a treated strip of plastic
that is hung inside the behive. I do not use the strips, and opt for
the resistant bees instead.
