In addition to light, one thing I have found that affects Dionaea trap color
is media. I have tried several brands of sphagnum peat in my media (3/4 peat,
1/4 sand) and found that certain brands seem to cause more red in the traps.
Plants are all from the same seed batch and grown under the same conditions.
Though there is some genetic difference in seedlings, the color (pale or red)
is mostly uniform within individual flats containing specific brands.
Unfortunately the peat seems to vary in quality year to year so there is no
certainty of finding a single brand that works well long term. Right now the
peat seems to be of a lesser quality and most of the plants are on the pale
side. Bummer.
