Hello,
I'm glad to be on this listserver. My name is Judy Showers & I
live in Central Pennsylvania. We have a 10' X 22' greenhouse where I
grow a multitude of tropicals. I have been interested in CP's for years
when I used to buy Dionaea's in the 5 " 10 cent store & killed with with
ordinary tapwater. It took me years to realize the importance of
rainwater: i.e. acid rain. I now grow Drosera, a few Sarracenia,
Pinguicula, and Nepenthes. I seem to have the most luck with Nepenthes,
probably because it is a warm greenhouse. I don't have good luck with
Sarracenia, probably because it doesn't get cold enough in the GH in the
winter, and I am "chicken" to plant the sarracenia outdoors to "winter
over." I have a friend (Mike Sankovich) who lives in Dover, PA, and he
has the most outstanding luck with CP's, because he keeps them outdoors.
He recently bought some leftover rubber from me, (which we used to make
a pond) and he made a long & narrow bog which is beside his garage. He,
& I and another CP'er in central PA. want to start a discussion group
(the beginnings of a local club?) here in PA. I hope it works out. I
was fortunate enough to go to the CPCON they had in Lebanon, PA a couple
years ago but cannot go camping out with the other ones in Virginia & S.
Carolina. (ticks & I don't get along). My husband wouldn't approve,
anyway of me camping out with a bunch of cp'ers, so I just get the news
& see Mike's videos after he comes back. I have several books on CP's
and last May (1995) had a chance to visit Bruce Bednar in Labelle, Fla
when we were on our vacation there. I brought back some really nice
Nepenthes from the trip and here's where my question starts? I have
tried to take tip cuttings from N. alata (which is overgrowing the pot)
and cannot get them to root. I have tried perlite & milled spaghnum
moss, putting rootone # 8 on the bottom of the tip where I cut it off.
I cut off a 5 inch tip and followed directions of Lecoufle's book on CP,
but it rots. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks &
nice to be on board. P.S. I am looking to buy more CP's to build up
the collection as I don't have enough spares for trading purposes yet.
