Adrian,

The "algea" is probably the beginning stage for a type of moss
that seems to come up in everyone's pots. It can't be avoided
easily. It will compete for the light and the seed may not be able
to germinate if covered deeply. However, a little moss growing
with seedlings seems to improve their vigor, probably by increasing
the humidity around the stem and the adventitious roots...
