More Pygmy Stuff

Thanks for the e-mails. A couple of the issues perhaps merit a wider
audience.

Does anyone have access to the formal Generic description for
Drosera? I have what seems to be a Latin to English translation and
it only allows for 5-petaled flowers, thus excluding D Pygmaea which
usually has 4. 4-petaled flowers also seem to occur amongst the
natural hybrids, occasionally in x 'Lake Badgerup' and x 'Carbarup',
but quite frequently in D Nitidula Nitidula x D Pygmaea.

Possibly because of the stressful conditions under which I grow
my pygmies, I get quite a few sports, but the flowers have obvious
asymmetry. My record high is 9 petals on a D Roseana, and my
record low is 0 on a man-made Pulchella hybrid. That was quite
a surprise - I was expecting a medium size pale pink flower, but
when it opened it was small and greenish yellow. Of course, I was
looking at the backs (fronts?) of the sepals (tepals?).

Regarding pygmy names, I have compiled a list to show the ones
I am missing. One name from Adrian Slack's second book and
one name from Marcel Lecoufle's book have been included.

'Beermullah' = Occidentalis var Beermullah?
'Lake Badgerup' = Nitidula Omissa x Occidentalis
'(North) Bannister' = Mannii
'Muchea Pink' = Spilos
'Cateby' = Closterostigma
'Walyunga' = Walyunga
'Brookton' = Leucoblasta?
Gingin Brook = ??
'Gidgegannup' = Scorpioides
'Armadale' = Oreopodion
'Re(a)gan's Ford' = Citrina
'Millbrook Road' = ??
'Moora' = ??
'Toodyay Pink' = ??
'Mount Manypeak' = ??

Good Growing, Nigel Hurneyman
