Strange growth in _Nepenthes_

I recenlty obtained a few 3-4 node cuttings of an unknown _Nepenthes
sp._. All of the cuttings have rooted and are now 5-6 long nodes and
have sent out the beginnings of pitchers (I think it's _N. gracilis_).
Something that I've never seen before is happening to one of the
cuttings; at every node it has begun to develope the lateral bud. The
terminal bud is still intact and functioning, and the plant can't be
more than 4" long so the apical dominance should still be in effect.
Yet, I wonder if auxin production has been disrupted due to stress. Any
ideas?
