Huh? What is wrong with community planting? As I noted earlier, a sealed and
balanced terrarium experiences very slow plant growth, so fast growers don't
tend to spread nearly as much as they would in pots. (the sphagnum probably
will be the fastest grower). The overall effect of a community planting is
more aestheticly appealing than a series of pots (IMNSHO), and maintenance is
also lower. Of course, you can't frequently pull out and examine plants when
they're in a community terrarium. The arragement also makes labeling
undesirable. But if this is for a hospital display, the later are not big
concerns. If you want muckiness, just set up a series of pots and see what
slimy growths develop in the standing water at their base!
