Yes, I think there is a need for additional plant descriptors in trading.
It annoys me slightly when looking at someone's CP list to see entries
like:
_S.leucophylla_ (various forms)
That is not very helpful for me! I agree that "---" is quite ugly, but
the distinction between single and double quotes is so small it is
likely to be overlooked, although a cultivar should have the "cv."
designation too, like _S.X catesbaei_ cv. `Friar Tuck', or so I think.

The first time I saw one of these it was hanging on the wall over my
bed, as I was reading before sleeping. I was so fascinated I caught it
and called Gordon S. for an ID. Also called Salpugids (sp?)
