A couple of years ago, I bought a 500 watt system for about $150 from Berkeley
Indoor Gardening (the name may have changed - it's that place on University
Ave. a few blocks up after you get off the freeway.) Comes complete with
bulb, reflector, transformer, pulleys, mounting hardware. I grew all my
plants under it (back when my collection was a bit smaller!), and have found
since then, that although all the plants did ok, they are much better off
outside in the sun. Make sure you get a bulb with a "UV coat" - cuts down
on the UV emissions - if you're going to have the plants in a room you plan
to spend time in.
At the time, they made me sign a statement saying that I wasn't going to use
the equiptment for illegal purposes. So far no trouble from the feds!
