Subject: Re: Nepenthes hamata tips

Hi folks. Here's my two cents worth. I, like Michael Catalani, grow my
single specimen of hamata in a wide pot or pure New Zealand sphagnum.
The pot sits on a bed of damp sphagnum moss in an intermediate
greenhouse. The plant receives approx. 2000-3000 foot candles of light
and gets misted daily. The day temps range between 70-85 degrees and my
night temps average 50 degrees even during the most extreme heat of
summer. I love California!!!!! My plant was received this past January
and is already 4 times bigger than it was. I LOVE IT!!! Thanks Michael.
I also made sure that even as a small plant, it was able to feed on very
small, live insects. I have the luxury of raising feeder insects for my
arachnid collection, so food stuffs were always available. I never use
fertilizer. This would decompose and sour the sphagnum very quickly, and
they would much rather prefer live prey. Or at least I think so.

I will admit I pamper my plants, I now have around 40 species, mostly
highland. But experimenting with different conditions has certainly paid
off. When given the right conditions, and they love cool humid nights,
you will be amazed how quickly they respond, adapt and thrive. Please
make sure you use very pure water also. Very important. I hope 2001
brings everyone who grows this specie much success. Such a spectacular
plant deserves every effort we can garner.
