As the Deer panteth for the Water

This is a beautiful song that is popular in many Christian churches. I got this score from Ken Yao and have enjoyed it very much.

Here are two midi files for practicing:

Here are the words and chords. The notation "A/C#" means to play an A major chord with a C# as the bass note. You can see how the first line of the song has a descending chromatic bass line: D, C#, B. This is a fun song to try to create backup/harmony lines. Try using the bass technique of playing chord tones with scalewise connecttions between measures. When I get some time, I'll post a few example scores for playing backup on this song. As a variation, you might try playing the melody an octave higher for the second verse.

(Psalm 42:1)

D A/C# Bm
As the deer panteth for the water,
        G A D A
so my soul longeth after Thee.
D A/C# Bm
You alone are my heart's desire,
         G A D
and I long to worship Thee.

Bm G D
You alone are my Strength, my Shield,
          G Em F#
to You alone may my spirit yield.
D A/C# Bm D
You alone are my heart's desire
         G A D
and I long to worship Thee.

You're my Friend and You are my Brother,
even though You are a King.
I want You more than any other,
  so much more than anything.
